YouTube Women and New Media

Science and technology are no strangers to sexism. Both fields are dominated by men and have been attributed to masculine professions like inventors, scientists, doctors, etc. Meanwhile, women are viewed as nothing more than subjects and consumers- they "look but don't produce". Most sources of technology are targeted towards men and clerical jobs and programming were once considered "women's work". However, as soon as men started seeping their way into the field it suddenly turned into a more acceptable profession for men and became a profession skilled job.

As mentioned in this chapter, sexism is still present today, especially in science and technology. The video below is of a YouTuber and scientist named Emily Graslie. In this video, she addresses many challenges she has had to face not only being a female in a male dominated field but the issues that have popped up by her presence on the internet where it's easy to hide behind a gray face and a false name. Instead of focusing on the content, some of her viewers are more focused on her appearance and personal life. Perhaps if science and technology were more accepting to women of the field, it would not be so unusual for someone like Emily to openly and freely share her knowledge via the internet to educate and encourage. Much like women in history and to tie in to the feminism subject mentioned in the chapter, Emily is using technology to present her message to her audience and stand up against the opposing force of social expectations.
